Short tour of exhibition.

I will be sharing the house with Nigel Rhodes (my partner) and two guest artists - fine art artist Laura Mars and photography artist Julia Riddiough.

22 Duke St, Deal, Kent, will be open for the first 3 weekends in July 09. 11am - 6pm saturday and sundays.

Kati Saqui Shows : A short black and white film. 'positively sick' installation in the office, various new work and further developments of my effigies. A small tea towel installation.

Nigel Rhodes shows: new work consisting of driftwood a metal sheet and a reconstituted key pad with their new fine art identity.

Julia Riddiough show: challenges authenticity be creating a fictional/fantasy book of photographs, (placed on a black chair which is dressed wearing black pair of knickers) to escape from her own identity and confuse authentic identity to others.

Laura shows: hand made collection of ceramic mice and sock monkeys which are metaphors for her fantasy to escape mediocracy.

Kati Saqui Artist Statement

I like to turn negative things into positive things. I particularly like making misshaped irregular objects, to portray aspects of the human condition and this perfectly imperfect world. Western society considers this to have less value. In this show I am using chairs, tea towels, a family member’s fight against cancer and my dyslexia to show the very essence of what human kind is.

The techniques I use in my work vary from screen print, cyanotype - a photographic technique that translates positive and negative, drawing, short digital film narratives and book art. The style and materials I use are dictated to by the relationship to its content. It is predominantly conceptual and graphic-based which often develops into a conceptual installation.

This year I have specifically designed and created miss shaped limited edition fine art tea towels and side plates. These pieces are my statement of how modern day living has seduced me into believing life should be perfect at all times. I also like to emphasize the spontaneity of the human hand when making the individual pieces.

NIGEL RHODES Artist statement

I am an industrial screenprinter based in Westgate. I intersperse my industrial work with my art work. Consequently my art practice has an industrial feel. I classify my work as Industrial Contemporary Fine Art (I.C.F.A.).

I use driftwood and give it ‘star treatment’. I wash, clean, and apply three or four coats of paint to make perfect again, almost manufactured looking. This process places each piece metaphorically on a rostrum.

My early influences were artists Frank Stella and Philip Guston. Recently I am inspired by artists Harland Miller and Gerherdt Richter.

Julia Riddiough Artist statement

Do you remember me?

This book questions the foundations of documentary photography and the ‘truth’ in imagery by using found images and creating a narrative sequence from a random selection. I hope this challenges the viewer of the images, their own perception and interpretation / meaning. The project presents ideas around the subjectivity of memory, identity and truth. Highlighting the twilight difference between fact and fiction with images that fall between these boundaries.

Also engaging with the debates around ethics, editorship and authenticity and in turn the relative dilemmas that these areas pose to the creator, editor and author. It may also suggest that our memories can be vague and quixotic. Is the person we remember the person we perceive?

Does truth in imagery exist?

Laura Mars Artist Statement

This body of work is totally different to my usual oeuvre.This is the first time I have shown this private collection. I have used darkness as my motivator and the spider as a poetic metaphor. Figure heads, cobwebs, mice, and sock monkeys are my visual language.

Two artists Max Beckmann and John Bellany’s have especially influenced me in this particular work, in different ways their creations are for me, larger than life, dark twisted and fairground whirlwind narratives and make fantasy out of the everyday. These artists have, spirituality and escape from the minutiae of housework and the humdrum of every day.

I am not obsessed with housework but sometimes it becomes part of the narrative, the cobweb people are metaphors for life long dreams and aspirations that have been hanging around gathering dust.
